When you joined Glee, what was it like being the new boy on such a popular show?
I had this very unique perspective because the rest of the cast had been doing the show for a year or so.
Then I came on and I had this out-of-body thing like, ‘You’re in Glee. What the hell?’
I’d watched it become this huge thing, so to suddenly be a part of it would be like, say, finding yourself in Avatar 2.
It’s very humbling but everyone on the show is so lovely. I’ve lucked-out in every way possible.
How did it feel when you got the call saying you’d landed a part on Glee?
I thought it was a joke.
I have a theatre company [Team StarKid] and I was in the middle of getting together my newest show and finishing the score for it. I was on a call organizing all that so when my agents called saying ‘You’ve got Glee’ I thought they were messing with me to throw me off!
Luckily, I’ve been able to do both projects.
The funny thing is I was actually thinking about throwing in the towel with acting because my music was going so well. It was a left turn and here we are.
Do you feel a sense of responsibility towards your fans?
Yes I do. I’m just the schmuck who got really lucky and it feels I’ve been given this cape and I’m a bit small. I’m not a superhero, I’m just some random dude!
What’s your happiest memory of filming the second season?
It was truly a blast to shoot; there’s such a nice family dynamic on set.
But my fondest memory? Shooting Teenage Dream was my first day on set and all the Warblers were just getting to know each other.
Did you enjoy performing on the Glee tour?
It was a very bonding experience, but there weren’t too many pranks because we didn’t have the energy!
And it’s not just the cast - it’s an empire, man.
There’s something like 14 buses and 11 trucks and a massive crew putting together this huge spectacle.
Do you know if you’re returning for the third season?
I hope I am, but I feel I’ve gotten so damn lucky that for me to feel entitled to anything is ridiculous.
I don’t deserve any of this, I’ve fallen ass-backwards into the most incredible experience I’ve ever had, and whatever happens I couldn’t ask for any more.
